The very challenging harvest of 2008 has produced a surprisingly concentrated, fruit- forward and approachable Pinot noir. The aromatics of the 2008 Pinot Noir literally jump from the glass. The precise red cherry, which is our trademark, is front and center supported by raspberry compote and crushed strawberry. Balsam, scorched earth, orange rind and rose notes are present. The color is a deep Windsor red. The palate entry is full and rich, leading to a broad plush mid-palate with integrated fine grained tannins. The fruit flavors are red with baking spice that fan across the back end and finish long and persistent. This vintage is similar to the 2004 in its fruit forward nature but with more structure and backbone. It is very hard to resist now as it gives so much immediate satisfaction but if you are patient it will gain complexity over a solid 10 year rest in your cellar.
The 2009 harvest was quite similar to the exceptional 2007, if a little less powerful, producing wines with excellent balance and cut. We picked the Chardonnay from the 8th of September until the 22nd, harvesting a full range of flavors in ideal weather. Due in part to this wide picking window the aromatics are some of the most complex we have seen in a long time. At first the nose is very mineral with wet wool and green apple reminding us of Chablis. With some air this falls to the wayside and more tropical notes of honey, white peach and acacia flowers come forth supported by lime leaf and quinine. The palate is dense but taut with bright acidity, medium weight viscosity and exceptional length. A wine that will appeal to the Chardonnay purist, the 2009 Chardonnay will cellar for a decade but as with all El Molino Chardonnays, after a short time in bottle, the wine will open up and provide great drinking pleasure.
